of HIV infected adults worldwide live in this region
India,
Thailand, Myanmar, and Cambodia account for over 90% of adult HIV cases
in this region
India
has the largest number of HIV infections in the world, (3 million
cases), although due to its large population, less than 1% of its populations
is infected.
HIV
prevalence among sex workers in India varies greatly. The rate in Bombay
increased from 1% in 1988 to 51% in 1993. The rate in Calcutta has remained
at a constant 1.2%.
Women
account for approximately 30% of infected adults in this region.
Heterosexual
intercourse is the primary mode of transmission, followed by sharing needles
for drug use.
