Early
in the epidemic, male to male sexual transmission was the predominant cause
of infection. Currently, heterosexual intercourse , sharing needles for
drug use are responsible for an increased number of infections.
In
Western Europe, HIV prevalence among pregnant women is higher in urban than
in rural areas, with the highest found in Paris, Rome, Milan, London, Madrid,
Barcelona, and Amsterdam. The rates in these cities range from 1 to 4 per
thousand women.
