Brazil
and Mexico account for over 7 out of every 10 infections in Latin America
Prevalence
is slightly more than 5 infections for every 1,000 adults.
Initially,
in Latin America, most HIV infections occurred among homosexual, and bi-sexual
men. Over the years, the number of individuals being infected through heterosexual
intercourse, and sharing needles for drug use, has increased. Currently,
women account for 20% of new HIV infections through mid-1996, but this
number is RISING due to the recent trend of increase of infection through
heterosexual intercourse.
Heterosexual
transmission has been and remains the predominant mode of transmission
in the Caribbean.
Over
40% of HIV infected people in the Caribbean are women.
Haiti
and the Dominican Republic account for over 85% of infections in the Caribbean.
