HIV / AIDS Statistics among Infants and Children in the United States

The number of children (children defined as being less than 13 years old) reported with AIDs decreased from 1,034 in 1994 to 800 in 1995. Of the latter figure, 84% were either black or Hispanic.

91% of children reported with AIDS in 1995 were infected through mother-child transmission

between 15% and 30% of infants born to HIV infected women have become infected with the virus.

There are approximately 60,000 orphans under the age of 18, due to HIV / AIDS related diseases; it is estimated that by the year 2000, if current trends continue, there will be as many as 125,000 orphans under the aged of 18.

Once born, there is still risk for HIV transmission from mother to child through breast milk; thus breast feeding for women with HIV is discouraged in the United States, because safer nutritional alternatives are readily available.
